When you build and launch your website, it’s not the end. Instead, it’s just the beginning of your online journey. You need to continually update your website’s content, images, and other elements to ensure it remains current and relevant. Many business owners ask me questions like “Will my developer support me after the website is launched?“, “Will I be able to make changes to my website myself?“, or “Who will update and maintain my website after it’s launched?“.
I am writing this blog to address some of the common questions that new website owners often have.
Who will maintain and update my website?
Let me clarify first, website maintenance and website updates are not the same. It may seem the same to many webmasters, but technically, they are distinct.
Website maintenance involves regularly keeping up the website. The maintenance of a website may include upgrading its core software, plugins, theme, and PHP versions. Website maintenance can only be done by professional web developers or web agencies that know what they are doing and always have a backup plan in place in case something goes wrong during the upgrade.
A website update, on the other hand, can include changing the text or images on the website. It doesn’t require any special skills to make changes to the website content. Website updates may also include adding new pages to the website or removing existing ones. With a bit of CMS training, a newbie webmaster can also learn to update the website themselves.
When updating a website, you have two options:
Option 1: Hire a web developer to maintain
If you don’t have the time to update the website yourself or don’t want to get into the technical details, you can hire a web developer in Singapore to assist you in updating your website according to your instructions. Of course, you will have to pay your web developer if you wish to choose them for this service.
Option 2: Do it yourself
If you don’t want to pay your developer regularly, you can learn the CMS of your website and make the minor changes to your site yourself. It doesn’t require any special technical skills, as I mentioned earlier. Most of our clients update their websites themselves because it’s not just about saving money; if you make the changes yourself, you can implement them immediately, rather than sending an email to your developer and waiting for their update.
Can I update my website myself?
Yes, as I mentioned above, you can easily update your website after a short CMS training, which most developers provide to their clients at no additional cost. Your developer can also provide you with a manual during the website handover process. This manual can help you understand the CMS of your website and guide you through making changes to it.
Will I get some training from my web developer?
Yes, every professional web developer will provide you with free training (offline or online) so that you can make changes to your website yourself. Alternatively, your developer can give you a manual to guide you through the easy update of your website.
