When hiring a web designer, it’s crucial to check their credentials. The credentials of a web designer to look for in Singapore may include, but are not limited to, their experience, expertise in web development, past work, and clients’ testimonials and reviews. It’s not just because of the money that you will pay them to build your website. But it’s also because of the crucial or confidential information about your website (website domain name & hosting access) that you will need to share with them to launch your website.
While it’s not optional for you to share the necessary information with your web developer, there are a few steps you can take to protect your sensitive credentials.
#1 Giving complete control
This option is straightforward and requires no action on your part. In this case, you will provide all the necessary access information that your web developer will need to launch your website. In other words, you will provide your developer with:
- The control panel details of your server (as provided by your hosting company).
- The credentials to access your domain name, if your domain name is registered through a different provider than your web hosting.
Your developer will need to point the domain to the web hosting to make the website accessible when users type the website name in the browser.
Tip: Since you are already providing complete access to your web designer, they will have full control over it. It is therefore recommended to change these credentials once the work is complete (i.e., the website is launched). You may want to change the passwords for both the control panel, WHM, and FTP, as well as the access information for your domain name.
#2 Giving restricted control
If you don’t want to share complete information about your hosting and domain with your web developer, you can add them as a user in your domain control panel and web hosting panel.
Please note that not all web hosting providers and domain providers allow website owners to add users to their accounts. Before subscribing to any web hosting package or domain registrar, ensure you check with them to confirm their terms and conditions.
In this case, also, after the website is launched, you should remove your developer from the users list. In the future, if you need their services again, you can add them as a user.
What if your developer is arranging web hosting & domain?
If your website developer is providing you with the domain name and hosting server as part of their services/contract, you don’t need to do anything. All you need to do is gather all the necessary information from them so that you can update it when required. However, it’s crucial to obtain all the essential information from the developer if you choose to have them arrange everything for you.
